Graduate School Financial Aid Knowledge Base

How do I get financial aid for graduate school? I have to admit I was luck enough to have my parents pay for my entire undergraduate education. They are well off and I did not have to apply for financial aid or student loans. I will be paying for my own graduate school and want to know how I go about applying for financial aid. Obviously I would prefer some assistance that I would not have to pay back, but would also take a low interest loan to supplement. I am 25, make $35,000 per year and do not live with my parents. Would I be likely to qualify for anything? How far in advance do I need to apply and do I need to know which school I going to for sure before I can? How do I get started? I would appreciate any advice. My parents did offer to pay for this, but I am looking to go an out of state school and would like to pay on my own and invest inmy own future. Thanks!
Can I get financial aid for graduate school? I read somewhere that I could receive up to 18,500 a year in Financial Aid for Graduate school. I work full time and made some good money last year, but only enough to survive really. Is this 18,500 bases on financial need, or is it available to anyone no matter what the income level you earned in a year?
Do students get financial aid/ grants in graduate school? If you're low income and never have had a job before, can students still get financial aid in grad school as in business school? i heard my friends say that undergrad is the only stage in education where you can get financial aid. Other than that, if the school pays, it'll only be a small portion of your tuiton...never your whole tuition. Can someone knowledgable or have obtained financial aid tell me if that's true.
My daughter is looking for financial aid for Graduate School.? She has applied to a school in Vermont which has a 1 year academic program followed for 2 years in the peace corps. I think because this is a unique program, and the goal is to assist needy people in the world, there must be some agency or corporation who would be willing to help with expenses. The program is expensive, but she will graduate with a masters degree, and she will have served in a meaningful capacity in a third world country. I would appreciate any suggestions. She is currently employed, and makes decent money, but she will have to quit her job to go to school. She has completed a FAFSA for federal aid and applied to the school itself for assistance. As far as work-study is concerned, that would be helpful for spending money, but she will nedd $40,000 for that first year. She graduated from college Suma Cum Laude in Economics.
How does financial aid work for Graduate School? Are scholarships available? If so, how can I get them? How about TA-ing or some other work study programs?
Can persons with Bachelors Degrees get financial aid for graduate school? if I were to get my undergrad degree in this or that and wanted to go to grad school could i still get financial aid?
Where can I find information on financial aid for graduate school tuition, ie scholarships, grants, etc.)? I'm in the process of going back to graduate school to get my master's degree, but have found an out of state program I want to apply for. Where can I search for grad school financial aid? I'm finishing two applications for graduate school and I know that I need financial aid. More specifically, I'm applying to two ELCA seminaries. I'm a member of FastWeb. I'd like to have some additional options. Thanks in advance!
Financial Aid for Graduate School? I'm in the process of choosing between two potential graduate schools. The first, is a cheaper, public school, but would require me to take an extra year of classes to fulfill prerequisite courses. The second school is a private school and costs much more to attend, but it would allow me to complete my degree at my undergraduate school and still graduate on time. I was hoping to get some answers on whether I would receive more financial aid from the private school because this would make my decision a lot easier. I know a friend of mine got a lot of financial aid to go to a private school, but that was for undergraduate. Does this apply to graduate school as well? Thank you!
Is it true that financial aid in most graduate schools consists of student loans? *I am going to go to my target school's financial aid office to find out soon. But, I'd like to get a general idea of what I'll be expecting.
Can you receive financial aid (Tap, Pell, etc.) for Graduate School? I just finished college, and I want to go to Graduate School. However I'm dirt poor, and the only way I paid for college was through financial aid and a small scholarship. Is their any way I can receive tap and pell grants for graduate school?
how many years can i receive financial aid for school? I think this is my fourth year receiving financial aid from FAFSA for college and my friend just told me that after the fourth year i cant get any more financial aid, that they only give you financial aid for four years. Is that true? If i continue going to school will i get financial aid? and what about graduate school? Do i get financial aid as long as i go to school?
What are some resources for finding financial aid/grants/scholarships to attend graduate school? I know about filling out hte FAFSA and getting aid from the Dept of education. I'm trying to find money that I won't have to pay back.
Financial aid for international student to attend Graduate School? I would like to persue graduate studies in the U.S, however I am finding it difficult to come up with the funds needed to finance my studies. Are there currenlty any loans that are offered to international students (with U.S cosigner) who need fianacing for their studies. Information on loans that I have seen so far indicate that I have to be enrolled in the programme (at least half the time) to get funding. I am in Jamaica
is there financial aid in new york state for graduate school? I don't think there is any fed grants, but I thought there may be something from NY for grad school grants.
i did not graduate from high school,am attending to community college can i get financial aid??? is it a requierement to graduate from high school to obtain financial aid !!!!!!!!!
Does Columbia School of Journalism accept financial aid? I've graduated with a BA in Journalism in 2007 and i'm having a hard time finding work. I want to begin attending graduate's school, but I'm dirt poor. The only way I could afford college was through financial aid, and I used my parent's income to do so. Does Columbia School of Journalim accept financial aid? If so, can I still use my parent's income ? ( I still live at home). If Columbia doesn't accept financial aid, can someone please list graduate schools that do.
I am applying to graduate school and have a question about financial aid.? My current debt load from previous education is 34K federal debt and 16K private loan debt. Currently I have 28K in my savings account (investments included). As I fill out the FAFSA and apply for aid would it be better to put my savings into paying off some of my debt first? Would having less in savings make it more likely a grad. school will offer me more grant money?
How will my retirement savings affect my ability to get financial aid for grad school? I have been working for almost 10 years and have been building my 401K since I started right out of college - now, I want to go back to graduate school, but I don't know if I'll be able to get any financial aid or favorably-priced student loans if I have retirement assets. Am I required to dip into this money as a first-dollar plan, or can I keep my retirement assets intact & still get financial assistance (even a Stafford loan)? Thanks!
can i get enough financial aid for school to help with rent & bills? i am currently working full time to support myself, but i need to quit in order to go to graduate school full time. I'm afraid i may not get enough financial aid and funding to support myself while in school. i am currently working full time to support myself (rent, bills, etc.). I would like to attend grad school full time so i can focus. I'm afraid I may not find enough funding to get through it without having to work....is it possible?
Graduate School, FAFSA EFC 0 and Financial Aid? I am 40 years old, a recent grad with my Bachelor's Degree and applying for grad school. I completed my FAFSA and my EFC is 0 (I have a son starting college in the Fall, his is 0 as well)...I understand financial aid is different for grad school than for undergrad...can anyone tell me if there are federal grants for grad students, or is it primarily all loans? I'm already $52,000 in debt from my undergrad degree, so it is quite scary the thought of more loans for grad school, plus more loans for when my son starts college in the fall. Thanks,
Does financial aid change once you pass the fourth year mark in undergraduate school? I am currently double majoring in biology and chemistry and because I made the decision after spending a whole year in college it seems that the only way I can graduate in four years is if I take more than 18 credits each semester. This is my third year in college and I have only taken three classes required for my biology major but am 4 classes from completing my chemistry major. I don't want to take too many credits because I have been there and done that, and the result was always disappointing. I feel that I gain more from my classes when I am only taking the minimum that is required to be considered full time (12 credits or 3 to 4 courses). I am going to check with my school financial aid office, but I have found out from dealing with these people for almost three years that they can be somewhat misleading. So I need honest answers from you guys, those of you who have been through it or knows someone in a similar situation. All serious and honest answers are greatly appreciated.
Other forms of Financial Aid for grad school? I am currently a teacher still paying off my student loans. I want to go to graduate school and get my masters in teaching Russian. My problem is that I make too much to qualify for aid but I dont make enough to pay for school (Russian is hard to find and expensive) Anyone got any ideas to help with funding?
I want to go back and graduate from high school, are there any financial aids that i could apply for? I only have to take one more class to finish, any kind of science.
I need financial aid for law school!? I didn't qualify for a Cal Grant when i was in undergraduate studies because i was using my parent's income bracket. However, now that i have recently graduated and plan on going to law school, i really need financial aid to pay, oh, about $120k for law school!!! I got my first "real" job right after graduation and make a decent amount. Does FASFA cover for graduate school? And if so, what's the income bracket for an single independent? I was kind of hoping for "free" grant money. After law school ends, i'll be paying off my student loans for the rest of my life!
Grad School App: Do I REQUIRE financial aid? Okay, I'm applying for graduate school as we speak. And I've come across two questions. A.) Do you wish to be considered for financial assistance? Of Course. B.) Do you require financial assistance? I am unsure how to answer this second question. I'm afraid if I answer no, they won't even consider me for finanical aid; but if I answer yes I'm worried they might reject me alltogether because they can't give finanical aid. If I don't get some sort of finanical aid (fellowship or Teaching Assitantship, at least), I'll probably be able to make it though grad school, but I'll probably have to take out a few loans. So, I don't REQUIRE finanical aid, but it is something that is very important. Anyone with experience know the correct way to answer this question?
How can I pay for school if I am ineligble for financial aid, have no credit and am poor? Please only answer with serious responses, I don't need to be told I am in a bad situation, I get it... I started college at 19, change my major once, got thyroid cancer, gained life perspective and decided I wanted to help people thru my career so changed it again. My problem is that my financial aid advisor for my city college in IL where I am pursuing a health career AAS degree told me that I am no longer eligible for financial aid because there is a limit to the amount of hours financial aid will pay for and then you need to have graduated. This can usually be appealed, but the problem is that I already appealed to be eligible again for financial aid following my cancer recovery because (silly me) I had not thought to formally withdraw from school when I found out that I had cancer. (I guess my mind was elsewhere.) So, because I already appealed for this, I can't again. FAFSA/Financial Aid/School Loans are all tied in with the school financial aid help. I am ineligible for Federal Student Loans and have no credit. I am also financially restricted by the amount of medical bills I have just finished paying off.
Is there such a thing as financial aid for graduate studies? I'm planning to go to CSU East Bay's business school and I wanted to know how you would pay for tuition.
Do you get more financial aid when you do better in school? I'm about to start my first year in college. I'm hoping to get a good amount from grants since I have a child I can claim. Just so I know for next year, do they give you more if you do better in the classes? I'm 24 years old and never went to any other school after I graduated high school so I know NOTHING about how this work. Help!! Thanks!
can i apply for financial aid if i do not know what school i am going to? I am a senior in college, and i have not decided where to attend graduate school. I know i am going somewhere though, and i want to apply for aid asap to ensure i get some...
Should I wait to continue on to graduate school? I am currently in my last semester of my freshman year. The two graduate schools that I am considering are Harvard and the Lauder Institute at Wharton (UPenn). They are both close to $100,000 for a Master's Degree. How much financial aid does a graduate student recieve on average? If I don't have much money, would it be smart to wait? If I obtain employment after I recieve my bachelor's and work full-time, will be able to attend grad school full-time, as well?
Is there federal financial aid for graduate students? My parents income made me ineligible to receive any government grants during my undergraduate years. Now I'm 24 and able to claim myself. Does the federal government offer any grants to graduate students? I completed my FAFSA and got a generic message saying I "may" be eligible. Thanks. (incase anybody is wondering, I'm going to grad school to receive an MBA)
Will getting married mess up financial aid? My fiance and I are planning on getting married in July 2008, he currently goes to a 4 year university and gets alot of financial aid. He has 1.5 yrs left there and then he plans on going to graduate school. If we get married will he get less financial aid to help him pay for school? thanks!
I graduated from High School last year and am looking for financial aid. Where have you had success? So far this website has been helpful. http://urlsnip.com/475574 After putting in my information they emailed me with different scholarships and even sent some in the mail. So far I've been chosen to recieve $7,000 in scholarships, which will not cover college, but something is better than nothing. Good Luck, and thank you.
how can I get financial aid for school if I am not a resident or citizen of the US? I AM IN COLLEGE AND I REALLY WANT TO GRADUATE, BUT I CANNOT SUPPORT MY FINANCIAL COSTS
Request for tuition solutions for students with poor credit and conventional financial aid is not available? I am back in college to complete my bachelor's degree so I can go on to graduate school. Unfortunately, I used all available financial aid the first time around, am not eligible for the Pell Grant and have poor credit. I'm wondering if there's anyone else with a similar situation that would have suggestions. I have registered for an online scholarship contest, but need to explore other options. I work full time, have normal family expenses. Assistance from my parents is not an option.
Financial Aid after Bachelors? Is it possible to get financial Aid for graduate school after you accrue loans for your Associates and Bachelors degree
Grad school financial aid eligibility? I'm about to graduate with my undergraduate degree, and thankfully my parents have paid all $150,000 of my tuition this far. Unfortunatley, that is it, and I will be responsible for any future educational costs. I'm 21 years old, and working part-time as I finish my degree. My plan is to begin full-time employment this summer with expected earnings of around $50,000/year. This is obviously no where near enough to cover tuition. My question is, if my parents stop claiming me on their taxes, will I be eligible for financial aid on my own? My parents make too much money, so using them will squash any financial aid awards. Also, my credit is horrible. If I get loans, I will need my dad to cosign, and I'm afraid that will cause his finances to dictate what type of financial aid package is extended.
Financial Aid For School When Pay? This is my first time getting financial aid for college. Once I'm granted a certain amount whether it be Subsidized or Unsubsidized, when do I start paying back the money? Is it within each semester of school? Can I wait until I finish graduating? What if I don't graduate but continue being a student for the longest time? How does it work? And which is the best one to pick? Please help! Thanks
How much financial aid will my wife and I get? I have already filled out my fafsa. I am in Graduate school and have used about 40k in financial aid so far for grad/undergrad. My wife owes about 5k but she is still going to be freshman starting over at Rose State (a junior college). We are married filing jointly and EFC was about 980. What can will we receive for the 2008-2009 school year? Also, is the cap for us as a couple, or will they "cap" us separately at individual limits?
Hi! I am a single mother and have taken advantage of financial aid? while my girls have been in college. My daughter is a senior and graduating from college in May and going on to graduate school. Can you apply for financial aid as a graduate student? I just want to know if its also available to graduate students, or is it only undergrad. Thanks so much. Thank you everyone for your invaluable advice!!!
Does London offer financial aid to international students? I was thinking of going to graduate school for fashion in London, do they offer financial aid to Americans? Are they stingy like us? Over here if someone writes that they are making $50,000 per year on the FAFSA, they get squat for school. Is it the same over there?
Can I get financial aid for undergrad courses taken after graduation? Need courses for medical school.? I want to apply to medical school. The only problem is I wasn't aware of this my entire undergrad career. I am graduating in May with a B.S. in General Studies concentrations in Criminal Justice and Psychology. Those are just there by chance. I need to take a year more of bio, a year of chemistry, and a couple of oddball courses. If I take them after I graduate can I get financial aid for them? What kinds of aid are available? I can't take them now because they'll all be lower level and I only have room for upper division coursework on my bachelor's.
need help with financial aid question and tracting of college!!!? i already have an undergraduate degree. i only took out a loan through FASA for one semester during my years in college. I am currently still paying off that loan. off. However, I decided to take some classes at a local community college for the spring semester. I was considering going back to nursing school and wanted to take some prerequistes. But, I am still workig part time and had to withdraw from all my classes. I didn't apply for any aid at the community college, so I didn't think anyone would know that I went there. But I just received a letter from the department of education saying that my loan payments have been deferred because I am now a part time student. I'm freaking out because I wanted to apply to graduate school but not send in a transcript from the community college. Will it forever be listed on my financial aid that I attended this community college, even though I didn't get a loan? what if i don't apply for financial aid in graduate school, maybe it won't come up
Anyone frustrated with financial aid/student loans? I am going to graduate school and I'm on financial aid - I get student loans. No, I'm not poor, but I don't have a spare 20K for a year of university...kind of like most people. I'm just really frustrated with it right now. I already have a job on campus to supplement my income and my parents are helping me as well. I don't live an extravagant lifestyle or have expensive hobbies or even go on vacations. But after tuition, university fees and books, I get a little under 8K to live on all year long. That's below the poverty line. And I'm not a single parent or a recovering addict, so I don't qualify for all the free stuff they get for going back to school. It just doesn't seem fair. Maybe I'm missing something because it seems like the system is set up to reward and perpetuate people who aren't responsible. Plus the whole financial aid/student loan situation after graduation seems like indentured servitude. I'm just really frustrated. Anybody else go through this? How did you handle it I have a roommate who is also a student. You're right - it cuts costs a lot, but I'm still scraping by and having to ask my parents for help sometimes. It isn't fair how the middle class are left out of these programs. Why can't they be merit-based or have some basis other than "Oh gee, you're an ex-homeless crackhead with three kids. Since you're breathing and all, please have free housing, free food, free clothes, free health care, and a free college education. Get a job if you feel like it, or don't - because of your "disability" - we'll still pay your way for everything you need." Why do those kinds of people get everything served to them on a silver platter, and I, as a middle-class upstanding citizen, get punished for not being a screw-up? It really ticks me off.
Can my financial aid officer limit the amount of my federal student loan? Hi. I was approved my full amount by my federal student loan people and I talked to my financial aid guy and they told me that I wouldn't be allowed to get the max because the loan people wouldn't let me. Well I found out that the loan people WILL but the school decides if I can get the amount I want. They decide if I need money or not. Can they do that? They have no right to tell me what I need and don't need. I pulled enough money out for graduate school and now I'm being shorted because they think I have a money tree in my back yard. Is there any way I can get the school to give me my full amount. I need that money for school and living expenses like it was taken out for.

I am a single parent with two children. I put myself through nursing school and? graduated in 2003. I work as a critical care nurse. I took students when I was an undergraduate student and I also have parent plus loans for my son who is a junior in college. I have applied to go back to school next year. The track I would like to follow in graduate school does not allow for online education or I cannot work part time and go to school. I will be obligated to go to school full time which I am looking forward to. The problem is I live in CA but has been admitted to graduate school in PA. I am willing to relocate to PA and live there and go to school and if possible get a job and stay there. What is the possibility of getting financial aid for graduate school?

Financial Aid for Private Schools? I am looking to enroll my son in a Montessori School next Spring he will be 3 years old and I am curious can I apply for financial aid for him this young? Question about grad school? Can you get financial aid for graduate school?? How competitive is it to get into grad school in NYC?
If I get a scholarship for Graduate School, can I use it to pay off previous undergraduate loans? I know this isn't conventional but my company is paying for most of my graduate school so if I won a $5,000 scholarship, and already had my current tuition paid off, could I use that money for any educational expenses such as rent, books, and previous student loans from my undergrad degree? I didn't think this was possible but I was in correspondence with a financial aid worker at a University and they said if my current bills were paid off that I would still get that money and could use it for any educational expenses. I asked this question to yahoo answers a couple of days ago and almost everyone said that I wouldn't be able to do this; has this happened to anyone before where they could use scholarship money to pay off loans for their undergrad or associates' degree? Thanks in advance : )
Financial Aid experts HELP! Questions about aid and grad school...? So here's my scenario: 1) Graduated from undergrad in May 2007. 2) Called Sallie Mae, they said my status is that I am enrolled in school till Dec. 2008 and won't begin repayment till July 2009. Don't understand how that could be...?? 3) I plan on attending grad school in Fall of 2008. Q1: Why does Sallie Mae think I am still enrolled in school till Dec. 2008? Is that a good thing (customer service rep says yes, b/c i won't be accruing interest and no need to defer payments...is that true)? Q2: Considering my scenario above, how will it affect my FAFSA application when I apply for grad school next year?
Financial aid (FAFSA) for my son? I have recieved Pell Grants before.? Will my son be able to recive financial aid? I just graduated from college. He graduated from High School in less than a week.

When you get married does it affect how much you get for financial aid? My fiance and I want to get married soon but I want to wait till after I graduate. We really wanna get married this summer but we are both scared it will mess with our financial aid for school, that we will get less. Is that true? If not what conditions apply to getting financial aid for school while being married?
Will he qualify for financial aid? My son graduated with a BS in May '06. He wants to go to graduate school in Sept '06. While getting his bachelors degree, he did not qualify for any financial aid due to income limitations of the family. (Parents had to pay). Now for graudate school he's declaring himself 'independent'. Which means we will not take deduction on '06 tax return. Will FAFSA look at him as independent for graduate school or will they expect parents to help pay (as they did for undergraduate degree)? Someone told me he has to be off our tax return for 1 year which means he won't get any $$.
Non US Citizens get financial aid? I heard last year that there was a new program for Student's from Mexico that studied and graduated from High school here in the U. S. This program would give them the possiblity to apply for financial aid to go to school. Does any one know anything about this?
