How can a college student get financial aid if he/she is undocumented? Can she start the legalization process? I'm currently a 3rd year UCLA student pursuing a career in medicine. My family came to the US from the Philippines in 1993 under my dad's L-1 Visa. I graduated from my high school at the top of my class, have worked numerous jobs, pay for my car, rent, and even have my own online jewelry business. HUGE problem though -- I'm undocumented and am unable to get financial aid. My father's visa expired some time ago and because of problems with INS papers, the visa is now out-of-status and our case cannot be appealed. I DO have a social security number, a valid employment authorization card, a CA driver's license, work for a US company, and pay taxes. However, I am unable to get federal financial aid because I am neither a US citizen or a Permanent Resident. I am really struggling with paying tuition, so I am wondering if there is ANY way I can start the legalization process at this point. Med school is expensive, and without aid, I don't think I'll be able to go. Any advice? Just to clear things up, I came here LEGALLY with my family when I was a child. My social security number and driver's license, along with my employment card, are ALL VALID and not FRAUDS or STOLEN. I get very good grades and go to a very good school (UCLA). I did NOT ask to be here illegally -- my dad messed up with the papers while he was trying to adjust our status and somehow my siblings and I got stuck in this situation. I am not much different than the other students in my classes. Most of them were just lucky enough to have been born here. For the past 2 years, I've been borrowing from my friends to pay my tuition and paying them back as soon as I earn enough. I know the DREAM act would solve all my problems, but there's no way of knowing when and if it will be passed. I don't expect the government to give me a free ride (although I definitely qualify for it). All I am asking for is any way to start the legalization process with my status if I am already 21. and for those wondering, YES I DO PAY TAXES and have been for the 4 years I've had jobs. Please don't give me the "why should I pay for criminals" crap because I'm paying taxes too. I've been here for 13 years and basically grew up in the US and just recently became out of status. I know it's my dad's fault for not taking care of adjusting our status, but if you know of any way at all that I can petition for a visa MYSELF, I would really really appreciate it. I have thought about just dropping out of college because it's getting very expensive without any aid at all, but I am very diligent and determined to succeed.
Does being on welfare make you more likely to get student financial aid? when you fill out the application for federal financial aid for college it asks if you or anyone in your household have ever been on welfare. Does this make you more or less likely to get more aid?
How can a high school student get financial aid to live alone? I am a high school student who was just forced to move across the country. I want to move back for my senior year. Financial Aid Professionals: What is the best way to re-structure the Office of Student Financial Aid? Four-year university of around 13,000 students. Currently OSFA has 30 employees. I need ideas for an organizational chart, workflow, etc. What works for your school?? Oh, yeah. We just switched from SIS to Banner operating system. I'm looking for some experienced advice. Thanks!!! We have thirty employees, but that includes four grad assistants, several student workers and all of our Student Employment Staff including student payroll. But kudos to all of the schools who process more students with less staff. This is why we need to restructure.

What should I do with my financial aid student loan refund check? What should I spend it on? It will be after school starts, & I will already have all my books & everything. I think I might get about $8,000 or less back, & I really need the money, but I don't know what to use it for. I would like to buy a used car for transportation to & from school, but someone told me I couldn't use it for that. The bus transportation system SUCKS here in Denton, TX! It's very ridiculous. It takes me 2 1/2 hrs. to get some place by bus that takes 5-10 minutes by car. Or do you think it would be easier if I take a cab every day? I estimated that would be like $320/month. I don't know...but the bus would be free, but it's dangerous to be taking the bus during dusk before 6 PM in order to get to a required 8 AM class. But @ the same time, you can't rely on a taxi to be there when you want it to. So I guess I'm better off with a car. Financial Aid doesn't ask you what you did with your money anyway. What else should I do with any leftover money?
How do student loans affect financial aid? This year (freshman) all of my tuition is getting payed by government financial aid. However, I need money for other things like housing and credit cards. Will a student loan affect next year's financial aid even if all of the money were spent? What kind of student loan would be better to get, private or federal?
Question about Student Financial Aid Process? I have applied for Student Financial Aid and although, I have been initially rejected... I have appealed to the Finanical Aid Officer and have been told my case is a "slam dunk." Given this, I am assuming.. (praying actually) that I will be getting money for college. I need to be a full time student if this does go through, thus leaving me with little time to work... which is fine, school is more important for me at this point. My cost of attendence is $9,672. which should cover me as a full time student for the whole spring/fall 07 semesters. My question is: Is that how much money I will be actually getting? Is it in one lump sum? How fast does it go through? I am only asking because the Registrar of the college called me tonight and told me to register, to make sure I get my classes before it's filled but how can I with no funds. :-( Edit: My estimated cost of attendence is $9,762. <-- the college came up with that quote not me! Also, if you owe money like to credit card companies... can this affect your financial aid?
Can I get student loans and financial aid during my bankruptcy? I am filing my bankruptcy soon, and i know it'll take quite awhile for it to be discharged, in the meantine and possibly before that I want to start school and apply for financial aid and a student loan, will I still be able to even though I have a bankruptcy in progress? and if not, what if I apply for everything now, before I file, but then would filing while recieving aid effect anything? would I not be able to get aid after that? or would it affect any loans or grants I would be recieving at the time?

Helicopter student with financial aid problems? I was wondering if anyone knew of a flight school that would train you as a pilot for free as long as you maybe signed a contract to work with them upon completion of the program? I'm training to be a helicopter pilot, and love flying, but due to problems with my student loan company, I'm faced with having to quit. I don't want to!! But don't know what else I can really do, so I'm hoping that there is another option somewhere. I'll go anywhere, heck I already moved from Buffalo, NY to Van Nuys, CA in order to pursue this. I have a very supportive husband and family, that want to help me, but none of us is in a financial situation to just pay for 80,000.00 of flight training and due to all this loan crap(the loan company has been anything BUT understanding and helpful), I'd rather not have to go through this loan business again. Any suggestions? Please help!

I was also turned down by Key loan because of a credit rating from a nagative report from sears whom I have paid in full. I need to borrow $3800.00 so that I can have enough funds for the semester. Key loans said to try back in 6months and make sure that everything is cleared and they might give me a loan then. What am I to do right now? Is there anyone that will sponsor a 25 year old college student to help me stay in school? I owed sears $282.00 and I was making payments but not the amount they were asking all the time. Pay taxes on student financial aid? I live with my sister while I'm going to college. My only source of income...or my only source of money...is from financial aid which of course goes towards tuition, books, etc. Do I need to file that in taxes/pay taxes on it? My brother-in-law says I don't have to (he knows a lot about taxes), I just want to make sure to be safe.
Does student loans or financial aid give you enough to survive college on.? I'm a good student and I want to go to college but my family cannot afford it. I'm planning on being in college for many years, my goal is a Master's degree at the least. So would a loan or Financial aid be able to hold me that long or possibly for a higher degree? Would I have enough left over to live on?
What type of financial aid can an International student get while attending a US University? ... if any. If there /is/ some financial aid for international students, please give names and explain them or link to appropriate websites. Any extra information you would like to include would be fabulous. Oh, and is it provided by their home country [mine being the United Kingdom] or the country in which they are studying - in this case; the United States.

Can you receive a refund for a semester of school you paid for or receive financial aid late for it? Financial Aid was not available due to a federal loan taken out in students name by Identity theft. Then the loan went into default and there is now a hold on the students financial aid with the school due to this. The student paid for the classes with no financial aid. QUESTION: If you are not able to receive Federal student Aid at the start of the semester, once the loan is out of default, and federal aid is reinstated can a refund be issued or financial aid received late?

Why did I get less financial aid as an independent student? Up until this year, I had signed up for financial aid using my mother's income which is very low. I've gotten a full ride every year and had extra money left over. This year I was able to apply as an independent student, and barely got enough financial aid to cover my tuition. What gives? I called financial aid and they said that was correct. How is this possible when there was more money made between my mom and I in previous years than what I made alone last year? It doesn't make any sense to me. Now I have to take out hella student loans.

student financial aid!? My daughter has been in college since 2004 and has been gotten some student financial aid, but my son and my wife will be in college this Fall also. My wife will receive almost 80% of her cost, but my son is getting only 25%. I thought with having three in college and increasing number of household (In-law have moved with us) with no income, we would get more help. By the way my income has not changed since2004.
student financial aid/loans question...need help? I have two questions but they're closely related. This is my first year of college. My student aid did not cover my tuition. So, I got a student loan from the gov't. I know aid is taxable if it exceeds the cost of your tuition and stuff but what about the loan? My friend said student loans aren't taxable but I don't know for sure. The total amount of my aid and loans together more than exceeds all the costs of tuition, fees, books, etc. but the aid alone does not. Second question, if my student aid is my only source of income for the year and it isn't taxable...do I have to file taxes? just want to say thanks for the quick answers

Financial Aid?!?!Student Loans?!?! D:? Hi, I'm a freshman in college and have never really thought about financial aid since my parents are middle class and after filing a FAFSA last year, we do not qualify for any, for a UC, anyways. They have also always said they are going to pay for my college education. Now, however, I am thinking of paying my own way through college for the next few years, because I feel the fact that they are paying for it is keeping me from getting the most out of my college experience (they are, at the same time, babying me yet pressuring me like crazy). I realize this will take a lot of work, but could someone give me the 411 on student loans and whether I could get financial aid, is there a legal process that I would have to go through to basically financially divorce myself from my parents? (I also plan on moving out after I figure this out..)
Anyone frustrated with financial aid/student loans? I am going to graduate school and I'm on financial aid - I get student loans. No, I'm not poor, but I don't have a spare 20K for a year of university...kind of like most people. I'm just really frustrated with it right now. I already have a job on campus to supplement my income and my parents are helping me as well. I don't live an extravagant lifestyle or have expensive hobbies or even go on vacations. But after tuition, university fees and books, I get a little under 8K to live on all year long. That's below the poverty line. And I'm not a single parent or a recovering addict, so I don't qualify for all the free stuff they get for going back to school. It just doesn't seem fair. Maybe I'm missing something because it seems like the system is set up to reward and perpetuate people who aren't responsible. Plus the whole financial aid/student loan situation after graduation seems like indentured servitude. I'm just really frustrated. Anybody else go through this? How did you handle it I have a roommate who is also a student. You're right - it cuts costs a lot, but I'm still scraping by and having to ask my parents for help sometimes. It isn't fair how the middle class are left out of these programs. Why can't they be merit-based or have some basis other than "Oh gee, you're an ex-homeless crackhead with three kids. Since you're breathing and all, please have free housing, free food, free clothes, free health care, and a free college education. Get a job if you feel like it, or don't - because of your "disability" - we'll still pay your way for everything you need." Why do those kinds of people get everything served to them on a silver platter, and I, as a middle-class upstanding citizen, get punished for not being a screw-up? It really ticks me off.

college, financial aid, student loans, oh my...? I am 23 and have been out of college for a couple years, having a child and getting married and all, but I recently decided I would really prefer not to be a server for the rest of my life, so I am going back to school this fall come hell or high water but I have a couple questions, when I was in school before I had scholarships that covered everything so financial aid wasnt really a concern but now it definitely is, I filed a fafsa online and got my SAR, it says my EFC is 2608, anyone know what this means? My husband and I make an ok living so I doubt I will qualify for much but I also know I can not afford to pay for everything myself, so heres my other question, will I be able to get a student loan if I have bad credit? I am going in to talk to a counselor at the college sometime this week but I want to go in with some idea of what to expect so any thoughts and comments are welcomed, thanks in advance!
Student Financial Aid Question? I'm attending college and receiving stafford and perkins student loans. However, I canceled my enrollment for this semester and plan to attend the same college next semester. I got a letter saying I should go through exit counseling and stuff. How does this really work, I'm taking a semester off and will I have to repay my loans now? I will be attending again next semester so I want to repay after I graduate
College Student Financial Aid Question /Grant Status /Money? I'am a college student and have received x amount of dollars as a federal grant.Apparently, any money that I do not spend (money that is left over) goes back into the system and does not carry over towards my next semester. My question is:Am I permitted to spend that extra money on other books - that I may be interested in - that are not a part of my required reading?
Returning adult student needs Financial Aid help.? I have been told that I am considered a returning adult student. I am 25 years old and am getting ready to apply for transfer to UC Berkeley in Fall. I am an honors student with a 3.9 GPA. I left school many years ago to work and I currently work full time as a computer software engineer. I make a very nice living currently. Unfortunately, in order to go to a four year institution I will need to stop working. I plan on having all debt paid off before I go, so this should lower my bills. My problem is that all financial aid seems to be calculated based on the salary I made the year before. I am worried that if I continue to work until Fall/08 then I will not get financial assistance (other than scholarships) until Fall/10 (09 being the year I make nothing). How can I get any aid to pay for school if my tax returns say that I made so much money? Why do they not consider how much you are making at the time you apply for aid?
Student loan/financial aid question? My relative is a single mother and 25 years old. Would she be able to possibly qualify for financial aid and get enough student loans to live off of for two years? She'd get a two year degree and needs money for rent, food, etc during that time. She also has some money from a GI bill after recently being honorably discharged from the Army, after three years of service. I appreciate any advice for her. Thanks!
Auto Loan, Student Loan, & Financial Aid Help? I'm currently thinking of applying on all three this summer. I have a full-time job but seeking to replace with a part-time job to pay my bills and make room for school. I plan on applying for 2 loans: $10,000 for auto and another $15,000 on student loan. I have limited credit history of 8 months with a credit score ranging from 640-660 maybe even at 680 due to regular payments on my 2 credit card bills. I've had my current job for a year and a month but working here won't get me anywhere that is why I decided to further my career by going back to college. I am also currently applying for my financial aid as a full-time student to help out with school's tuition and expenses. I could probably deal with $400-500 a month payments for the two loans and I have minimal payments for my living and misc expenses. But would this be a good decision? I need experienced individuals to advice and give suggestions pls. Thank you very much!
Returning college student needs financial aid help!!? I'm a 25 year old college student with a bachelors degree and just returned to school to pursue my dream of becoming a fashion designer. I'm attending a private design school that will cost around $30,000 for the two year program. I was told by the financial aid office that I do not qualify for grants since I already have a degree, so my only options are federal loans (Sallie Mae) and loans through private lenders. What other options do I have without ending up with an overwhelming amount of debt? I'm not able to work due to the demands of the program and I already have a fair amount of consumer debt plus living expenses. I will do anything to be able to pursue my passion, but I'm scared I won't be able to afford it. I graduated with a 3.9 college GPA and I have a ton of accolades and honors. I just need to pay for school! Help!!!

Grad Student Financial Aid? I am 25, have 4 years of work experience, and am planning on going back to school to get an MBA starting this Fall. I have been accepted, and now I am trying to figure out how I should pay for it. Are there any loans that you all know of that have deferred payment AND interest till after you graduate? What if a person has enough money to pay for grad school all together. Is it wise to even take out a loan so that he/she can make interest on the money that they have save up from a money market account or cd? Any advice is appreciated. Thanks.
Student Financial Aid Application (FAFSA) Expected Family Contribution=$0...Will I get money for school? Just curious if anyone knows about what I will get. Tuition is $2,300 per semester at state school. I just had to report my income because of my age (23). I didn't get to work much last year because of school (overloaded). This is my last semester of college (Fall '06). I have always got a small PELL grant and been offered loans. The reason I am asking is because this is the first year that I haven't had to include my mom's income on the FAFSA because I am now 23 and they consider that to be INDEPENDENT. ***REPEAT*** I am a senior, not a freshman. I have done this before and i just want to know how it works when your EFC is 0. Thank you all for your in-depth answers, but I know what PELL grants, Stafford Loans, and Perkins Loans are. I guess I should have been more specific in my question and details to begin with. Thanks for the answers!

Adult student financial aid? I am looking at UC Santa Cruz which costs a total of 20,000 per year. Is there anyway I can cover this being a 29 year old freshman who makes less than 20,000 a year and recently unemployed? Or is there a cheaper school? I need room and board.

Write your Senators and tell them NO to DREAM ACT - student financial aid for illegals - this is ridiculous!!? People this is a nightmare!!! Why should an illegal person get free money for school? Hurry and write your Senators and tell them to act on American citizens behalf and not on what they think are future voters. WTF! California strikes again - can we give California to Mexico and be done with that state? this is not just a liberal idea - check out the story! http://www.nilc.org/immlawpolicy/DREAM/Dream001.htm Once an illegal student receives in-state status, then they can apply for scholarships... unbelievable! Excerpt: "Permanent residence would be granted at the end of the 6-year period if the student has met these requirements and has continued to maintain good moral character. The DREAM Act would also eliminate a federal provision that discourages states from providing instate tuition to their undocumented immigrant student residents, thus restoring full authority to the states to determine state college and university fees." ... "Our immigration law currently has no mechanism to consider the special equities and circumstances of such students. What "special equities"???
Financial Aid, Student Loans... get money from that? I don't know if this is a stupid question... but could I get money from my financial aid to get a lap top. I need one terribly and do not have the money. I just want to like add the money on my loans. Could I do this? Would I just talk to the financial aid people at my school? I am lost on this issue...
Please I am needy student at the University of Ghana and where can I get student financial aid now? I wish to appeal for educational support as a needy student with low financial backing.I am 20 and a first year student at the University of Ghana. I successfully gained admission in August this year to read Geography & Resource Development ,Political Science and Sociology. I am now unable to meet my financial obligations to the university and I now stand the point of dropping out of the university . I completed my senior secondary education in 2004 when for the first time gained admission but could not offer the honour due to financial constraint. But I managed to pay the admission fee this time with the support of educotinal philantropists.I am now facing the realities of campus life without money. Currently as we are in the mid-semester, I am not even fully registered with the various departments I belong to and the registrstion period has elapsed too, which I will have to pay a penalty for late registration failure to which I will not be allowed to sit for any examination.
Financial Aid and Student Loans? I received a student loan through my college as well as receiving financial aid. Can I try to get additional student loans and if so, what are some good lenders to use.
Financial Aid- Which Student Loans?? I got a letter in the mail today describing my financial aid that my school will give me. I guess i will need to take out some loans since I do not have the money to pay for it, but all of the loans they provide (Stafford, Student PLUS etc) all have extremely high interest rates 7-8.5%. Is this normal? Is there any other decent place where I can borrow money for a lot cheaper?? Also, should I take the loan out in my name, or my parents name? My parents will contribute less than $3000 to my education, and I will have to pay the majority of it. Thank you
