Does anybody know about getting financial help for cancer meds?

My mom has breast cancer that has come back in her bones. She has no insurance. She doesn't qualify for help from the state. Her medication is $4000.00 per month. Does anybody know where we can get financial help? I hate to say that it is a matter of life and death but, it is. Thanks so much for your help!!

  1. Have you contacted the county's department of social services? That's separate from the state program. Also, contact her oncologist's office. The staff will also be able to point you in the right direction. Believe me, she is not the only patient they've had with financial issues. You can also try contacting the pharmaceutical companies directly. They do have programs for those who must have their medications. She may be able to get it for free. Make sure you are comparing prices at the pharmacies. They can vary big time. Good luck.
  2. If she does not have cancer coverage she is eligible for a program called Breast and cervical cancer program. Her social worker where she got treatment should know about it. This covers everything-as long as your mom doesn't own assets over 3,000 plus the house she lives in. Get ahold of the Dept of health and human resources in your area and don't stop til you get help. Mine paid for everything even retroactive to the surgery. In WV you can call 800-642-8522 ask for Sissy and she will find the # for your state. Good Luck.
  3. Call your doctor and get a letter of diagnosis. Call Social Service and explain the issue. Find out the name of the medication and the manufacturer from your doctor and call the customer service number and explain the issue. Social services, your doctor and the manufacturer will work together to help your mother. Based on your comments about being in the bone, your mother probably needs radiation therapy plus meds and a period of hospitalization. I don't know how old you are, but this is a big responsibility at any age. I am sorry for your mothers illness and your situation.
  4. Call your local Hospice center. I don't know about your state but in mine they cover the costs of any meds that you cant pay for. They will also come in and check on your mom daily, or as often as is needed and in most cases work as a liaison between her and the doctor and can get things done much faster
  5. Well if you could cure her cancer for less than $100 would you try? If you are interested, read "How to cure cancer with ginger" at this web site. It worked for me! http://www.geocities.com/cure.cancer/
  6. Start with the American Cancer Society. They should be able to point you to the resources in your area. Best wishes
  7. Gosh, what a scary position to be in. I know that feeling first hand, I was there when I was first diagnosed with breast cancer. We were inbetween insurances when I received the diagnosis, and our new insurance wouldn't cover me. So, for the entire diagnosis process, biopsy after biopsy, I was uncovered. What helped us the most was just being honest with the hospital and doctor's offices. The hospital that I had my biopsy's at wrote the expense off as a loss. They were able to write it off of their taxes. The ones who wouldn't do that I just billed me at the medicare rate and accepted monthly payments - I pay everyone $20 to $50 a month. Two years later, I am still paying on some!! Also, I contacted the American Cancer Society and discussed my case with them. Since I was under 40 with Breast Cancer, I was able to receive some help from them. They covered my doctor's bill in exchange for my medical records for their research. Sometimes, if you are paying monthly payments on time every month, at the end of the year they will just write off the balance. You never know unless you ask! I have found that, in general, everyone has been very sympathetic and caring about the situation and would try to help me as best as they could. Tell your mom to get the best treatment she can, and worry about the cost later. Her life is WAY more important than money. It will all work out!! Hang in there!! Good Luck~ Jen
  8. So sorry about ur Mom. As a survivor of cancer I found that the Social Security Administration was a huge help, if she quailifies for the benefits and recieves at least one dollar a month then she is automatically approved for medicare. American Cancer Society only offered to pay $200.00 a year in perscription drugs! Also, contact ur local Christian Ministries or Salvation Army.
