Financial Aid?

I'm 20 years old. I live in my own aprtment i pay for my own bills. I work full-time and I go to School full-time. I get decent grades. However because I'm not 24, a mother, or married I can't get financial aid because I have to list my mother on my FAFSA even though she doesn't support me. I can't afford to continue to go to school any suggestion on how I can get financial aid?

  1. My friend had the same problem, its a pain but go to the courts and emancepate your self.
  2. I hate to break it to you... you can't. I remember having a break down crying because I was told the same thing. I had to wait until I was 24 to finish my education. My parents couldn't afford to flip my college bill and the financial aid office said I was screwed... If you don't mind doing it sometimes you can get a loan through a bank but it does not operate as a normal student loan and you might have to have a co-signer. Good Luck, and trust me there are a lot of us that know how you feel! Have a GREAT day!
  3. I work at a university - here is what I know... You can talk to your financial aid advisor and see if there are any circumstances in your life that would allow your school to make a "professional judgement" that you are independent. This can only be done if you are totally removed from your parent/s. If your mother gives you any money at all, or claims you on her tax return, it will be a no go. If you and your mother live totally separately and she does not offer you any support, it is a start. Additionally, if there has been a "break" in the family relationship, and you can get a professional such as a psychologist, minister, etc... to document that, it would be helpful. It sounds bad, but that is the only way it can get done. It is hard to get done, but you could at least try. The only other thing you can do is to go online and google scholarships based on your characteristics, for example, blond hair, blue eyes or irish-american, or child of single mother, or, originally from Philadelphia, etc... There is a ton of money out there that hardly anyone knows about because the scope is so narrow. Good Luck!
