Emergency financial help for people in need?

My mother has recently had major surgery and is unable to work very much. She has been denied for SSI and disability. My father died in Sept. and my mother is having trouble paying her bills and basic living expenses like rent and power. I wish that I could help her more but I'm not financially secure and am struggling with bills myself. Does anyone know of any resources in Nebraska that might help her?

  1. Sadly for American's with no children there really are no federal programs that will help. She may be eligible for food stamps. She may also be eligible for low income housing for the elderly or disabled. She could get on a list for housing assistance, they have very long waiting lists. Get on the list anyways eventually her name will make it to the top. Contact the electric company they often have programs to help low income customers.
  2. She should appeal the denial for disability. It can take months and arguing with them, but if she can't work she should be eligible. I would contact a charity there and see if they can help you or if they have a list of contacts of who could help her. There is aid available at both the state and federal level.
  3. I know you probably don't want to move back in with your Mother but this could be the fix you both need. You mentions you are having trouble paying your bills and you know she needs your support right now. Your mother can also see if one of the local churches can help or get a roommate. good luck
  4. Mabye you and Mom can rent a place together for a while. It will help you both get caught up on things.
  5. One of the other posters stated to appeal the decision for SSDI. I strongly agree this process may take a while but in the long run you will be better off. Most attorneys (you will have to call a few to find out) but when you file and fight the decision they will work it out with SSDI for their payment so it won't be an out of pocket expense for the attorney. Most cases once you get the decision overturned you will receive back pay from the date you originally filed. Personally I believe they deny them at first so people would give up and not fight the decision. But your mother worked and I am sure your father worked so they have paid their dues to them why should you not get what is coming to you. I have had a friend just recently go through this and they won and got back pay.
