Anyone frustrated with financial aid/student loans?

I am going to graduate school and I'm on financial aid - I get student loans. No, I'm not poor, but I don't have a spare 20K for a year of university...kind of like most people. I'm just really frustrated with it right now. I already have a job on campus to supplement my income and my parents are helping me as well. I don't live an extravagant lifestyle or have expensive hobbies or even go on vacations. But after tuition, university fees and books, I get a little under 8K to live on all year long. That's below the poverty line. And I'm not a single parent or a recovering addict, so I don't qualify for all the free stuff they get for going back to school. It just doesn't seem fair. Maybe I'm missing something because it seems like the system is set up to reward and perpetuate people who aren't responsible. Plus the whole financial aid/student loan situation after graduation seems like indentured servitude. I'm just really frustrated. Anybody else go through this? How did you handle it

  1. Not me personally...but my son who is now 38 is just finishing his doctorate and will be owing student loans until he dies. He as well as the balance of young folk have been sold the dream of higher education. We as a society told you kids that the only way to succeed was to advance as high as you could...get a great education....and then a great job would be waiting for you on the back side. Well the banks, finance companies and sharks were listening and a cottage industry surfaced which has caused significant indebtedness aimed at our youth. It is just another corporate juggernaut making money. What can you do? Not much....pay down the debt the best that you can until your parents die and then take what little money they give you as an inheritance and pay down or pay off your loans.
  2. I attended grad school by paying tuition and fees with student loans and supported myself with "almost" full time jobs. When I became a junior, parents stopped paying my tuition. If it wasn't for student loans I would never have attended college or graduated with a bachelors degree or a masters. I I pay back my student loans PROUDLY and have that AWESOME job I always wanted. You can do this. I did.
  3. Wow I'm already frustrated and I'm just about to be a college freshman. Yea its not fair....my parents make too much for me to be eligible for any financial aid BUT they are not helping with my education...I don't think its fair how education $$$ is distributed
