- You must supply the parents information who provide 50% of your total financial support so as you live with your father, you have to use his information. Fortunently, the IRS and the FAFSA are not directly linked so they will never know. The only potential problem is that if you get selected for verification, you have to submit both your and your parents tax returns and they might question why you are not listed on your mothers return but most likely they will not. You should be fine, incorrect but fine.
- Why won't your father give you his tax information? Perhaps he doesn't understand what the information is used for. Some parents think if they provide the information on the FAFSA they are financially responsible for the school costs, and they are not. If he does not understand, have your schools financial aid office speak with him. You should be providing your fathers information since he is the one who provides your support and he should be claiming you on his taxes. You will not, as the other person answered, be required to turn in the information on both of your parents because they do not live together. It does not matter for financial aid purposes which parents claim you on their tax return.
