College Financial Aid ... Parents..?
I got a serious problem I need help with with financial aid. My dad owns his own business and my mom doesn't work well taxes are harder if you own a business well my mom and have been procrastinating my brother ended missing college and moving on to other things becuase they never finished them and the same thing is happening to me now. Any way I can file my own taxes (im 19) and get financial aid without my parents taxes. I have talked to them and all they do is get defensive and made about it and I have no idea what to do. They are hurting my future and it really is pissing me off. They have been saying they will do them but they keep procrastinating they end up doing other things on the weekend other than doing them to help my future. I am in a major pickle and need advice... I really want to go to school..

- Have you thought about applying for scholarships? Some colleges offer community service programs. You work for the community & they will help you with your tution. I think there is a program that non-profit agencies do to give back to you for helping. Let me find the name of it.
- The only way to get around this is to have a court order to be emancipated from your parents. That alsomeans they can no longer claim you on your taxes...OR wait until youre 24, then financial aid will no longer depend on what your parents make, only you
- The sooner you are able to submit the FAFSA, the more likely you are to get financial aid, the longer they procrastinate, the longer they wait, the more you or them will probably have to pay for your education. Without their tax info you can't even attempt to pay for it yourself. With their tax info you can usually get some kind of student loan or maybe a grant to pay for most or part of it. Get a glass jar full of 15 to 20 - 1 dollar dollar bills and sit it net to your dad's chair. Every day take a dollar out and let him know that's one more day he may be costing you in funding your future. When all the money is gone and the jar is empty then deadline is up. No more procrastinating, no more excuses, no more time. Print out the estimated cost of attendance for the school and put it in the jar when the money is gone.
- FYI. Getting emancipated will have NO effect on your financial aid. You will still have to submit your parents information. If your parents hold off completing their taxes because they might owe something back, they can still have their tax return completed and not mail it in until later. At least you will have a completed return "if" you are selected for verification. Maybe that will work for them. Good Luck.
