How does college financial aid work for international students?

My name is Jospehine and I'm hoping to apply for Whitman with an IB score of 30-35 (but a lot of ECAs!). The issue for me is that I don't understand how financial aid in the US works, but I will surely need it! I'm not a US citizen, and my parents have said that the fees in the US are higher for international students, and that international students don't qualifiy for financial aid. My parents have also said they cannot afford to pay the full fees at a US liberal arts college, so I'm hoping there is some way I could take out a student load, but I really don't understand how the US system works! A simple explanation would be very much appreciated!

  1. You do not need to be a US citizen to request student loan and grant money. You will need an authorized student visa that allows you to study in the country. Each school is a little different on how Stafford loans and FAFSA (lenders) applies so check with Whitman once you get accepted.
