College financial aid?

I'm filling out a college application sheet and it's asking "Enter the amount your parents think they will be able to pay for your 2008-2009 college expenses." I'm not exactly sure what to put here because my parents don't know how much they're willing to pay for me to go to college. Any advice?

  1. Are your parents willing to take out student loans on your behalf or are they expecting to utilise Financial Aid and grants if you qualify. The question doesn't necessarily mean 'cash'. They can estimate what they think they can provide out of pocket and combine that with what they think they may need to borrow. Depending on the college......I don't think I would put zero in there. It's not going to look good. It says, your parents do not support your decision to go to college. Good Luck.
  2. This is referring to the EFC which is determined by your FAFSA.
  3. i would put zero. there are loans you can get by yourself, and this way, the college wont expect it from your parents. they can still help out, though.
