Is there federal financial aid for graduate students?

My parents income made me ineligible to receive any government grants during my undergraduate years. Now I'm 24 and able to claim myself. Does the federal government offer any grants to graduate students? I completed my FAFSA and got a generic message saying I "may" be eligible. Thanks. (incase anybody is wondering, I'm going to grad school to receive an MBA)

  1. Yea there is stuff out there. I went to grad school, was in a similar situation. I applied, I was eligible for loans, but no grants.
  2. Graduate students can't get grants, they are only eligible for loans, however, there are a lot of scholarships, and a lot of graduate assistantships, which is what a lot of grad students do. Check with your program and see what they offer.
  3. As far as I know, you can always receive a student loan but I don't think that the pell grant is for graduate students. You can try applying for scholarships.
  4. Is "federal" aid available? Yes. Loans and work-study (federal work-study is open to all students with need). But federal grants are closed to graduate students--the priority in funding is always on the undergraduate. That's not to say there are "no grants", however. Many universities have state-funded or institutionally funded grant programs available to high-need students. These are usually small grants, but they do help out with the costs. Then you also have departmental scholarships, teaching/research assistantships, fellowships and competitive grants. Where there's a will, there's a way! Best of luck!
