- In order to be considered independent you have to have a different permanent address than your parents.
- It all depends. Did your parents claim you as a dependant on their 2006 tax return? If so, they have to fill out the FAFSA for you. If you independently filed, then you do not need to fill that information out.. it states that when you fill it out online. I skip it every year, because their income has no relation to mine. The address you file it under has nothing at all to do with it. My youngest sister lists her permanent address on everything as my parents address, even though she is married. They don't like the neighborhood they live in, so important things are mailed to my parents address under her name.
- for federal aid you have to be 24+, married, have a child or enlist in the military in order to be considered independent on your financial aid documents. the fact that you filed your taxes separately from your parents or not has nothing to do with it. I had to claim dependent status my entire college career because of this even though I lived on my own and filed taxes on my own. You will need their tax information on the fafsa to apply. it is possible if there are extenuating circumstances that you could appeal your dependency status with your school but there has to be a real reason. if its just so you can get more money in aid that is not a reason for appeal. if your parents can assist with your college bills they should. if anyone could claim independence without any regulations there wouldnt be enough aid for the students who really truly need it.
- All the information you need is probably on your school's financal aid website. It's not the easiest thing to do and you will need to have been claiming yourself on your taxes, providing your own support (ie not living with them at any point during the school year, have a job), etc. Otherwise you are going to need to call them up for the numbers.
- You have to be 24, married, or have children to be considered independent from your family. Check out this link for more info
- There are many scholarships given out by government and other organisations every year. You can try for some online government scholarships or grants. Fill up online forms and see if you are selected for the scholarship. To know more you can visit http://www.scholarshipgrants.blogspot.com
