question about financial aid?

My 18 year old daughter applied to Queens college and was given almost no financial aid. They said because I owe taxes, it affected how much financial aid they awarded her. The crazy thing is My daughter does not live with me, never has and filed her own taxes under indepenedent. I do not claim her as a dependant nad I never have. What if any mistake did she make on her financial aid application that would cause such a thing to happen.

  1. The crazy thing about the FAFSA is that even if you are over 18, living alone, and independent in every way possible, they still consider you a dependent student if you are under 24, not married, not an orphan or ward of the court, not a veteran, and not pregnant or have a child. So, she is a dependent and they count both your income and her father's income as a source of money to pay for her college and if you, her father, or she owes any money to the IRS, she will receive little amounts in loans. There is another route she could try though- she could try to get a personal loan through a local bank for college.
  2. okay, there is no way your daugther can claim herself dependent until still is 24, so you will need to get your taxes and hers together no matter what. most likely she did make a mistake on her financial aid, she can go back to the website and make correction and ask queens college to see her corrected financial aid.
