Financial help!!?

I am in the process of leaving my university course before the end of the first year and am currently seeking employment. However! I live in a shared house with three other people and was wondering if i would have to pay council tax? I am only here until June and i can't see how it can be possible for me to pay £900 for only two months here! The only other option is to go onto jobseekers allowence but i would much rather work. Also i am at the limit of my overdraft (£1200)and although my next installment of my student loan should arrive next monday i would rather it didn't as i would like to join another course in a years time once my finances are sorted. If the bank just extended my overdraft it would be great but i haven't got the best credit record and i'm just a little confused about what to do. It's starting to get to me a little bit so any help will be most appreciated. I've run out of things to sell on ebay aswell! Thanks also, i've probably failed this year as i have mostly been flitting in and out since christmas. Hence me leaving, stupid, yes i know. The coucil tax answer was spot on, i didn't realise i would only pay two months, thanks alot. Any idea how much that would be? My rent is £280 a month with bills about £310. If i get a job now i need to make enough to pay my rent for next month plus trying to get out of my overdraft (last time this happened my bank froze my overdraft and i was left to live on no money and i had to move home) I have quite a chequered past with finance and university as i don't have a clue what i'm doing with my life. This is my second course i am leaving you see. Anyway thanks for the answers, this is my first question on here and has already helped solve a few mysteries.

  1. You should not have to pay £900 coucnil tax for simply two months. Can't you remain on the course. Just flit in and out whilst looking for a job or enrolling on the course that you really want to be on. That two months may give you some leeway to sort yourself out... The job seekers allowance may also be an option as you would get full housing benefit and council tax, though no enough money to really live on. Bare in mind that if you swap course and you get a student maintenance allowance [used to be called a grant] you may not get one for a new course unless you can show that there was some pressing reason why you could not complete your first course - i.e illness. You would still be entitled to a student loan if your income is still under £15k a year. ------------------------------------- Edit ------------------------------------- If your council tax is £900 for a year it will be £150 for two months. Ever thought about undertaking clinical trials to get some fast cash. I did a few when I was a student. Testing anti anxiety tablets. I go paid about £2500 for going to a clinic/hospital 2-3 times a week for two hours at a time. They were safe. You simply have to choose trials that do not look too involved. There are even sleep study trials See link: The link below will also have details about mystery shopping jobs where you go into shops and pretend you are a customer to test the staff's customer service skills. http://www.gpgp.net/
  2. Why on Earth are you expected to pay £900 for just two months? This doesn't seem right at all. The new year for council tax only just started today, so you should have a full 12 (or 10, depending on payment method), months to pay. I think your house mates might be ripping you off... If I've misunderstood, please correct me, and I'll have another think =)
  3. you will only pay for 2 months but if you dont work you dont pay anything
  4. Make an appointment at your bank to sort your over draft out,it is important you talk to them as late payments can affect your credit rating in the future. the local town hall will be able yo advise you on your council tax, you might be entitled to a reduction. As for job's try pub's and cafes, it's coming into the busy season so they will be looking for summer staff. Hope i have helped good luck
  5. If you are leaving uni early you need to check about loan re-payments because my bf's friend got in bad dept from not sorting these out. You will only need to pay two months worth of council tax so if its £900 over the year divide it by 12 and thats how much it'll be. If you contact the council tax people they will probably send you a bill, then you can request to pay this monthly. Simply pay for two months then let them no you have moved out and you won't have to pay anymore. Bad news is that if your stopping being a student and that overdraft is on a student bank account this will change as well so i doubt you'll get an extension sorry. Good Luck finding a job :-)
