How does one of the most Christian nations in the world ignore this?
"Jesus said to him, 'If you wish to be complete, go and sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.'" Matthew 19:21 American Republicans are having a hissy fit about just the prospect of universalized healthcare-- a successful standard for most Christian Democratic parties all over Europe-- and yet they tout their Christian "values" above others? The American capitalist system (a mixed economy, yes, but still lacking social spending that's considered elsewhere) is by nature based on the accumulation of wealth and property. Freedom is defined by financial opportunity, in fear of the "oppressive" tendencies of a social democracy. How do you reconcile this? I guess it's easy to just stamp your values with "pro-life," so long as saving those lives aren't costing you any extra. The Christian Democrats of an atheistic country like Switzerland put America to shame. Haha, but the Bible completely supported slavery, and gave guidelines for it. No where does Jesus say, "Kick those 'entitled' SOBs in the face, and tell them to get a job." Shoot, I meant to put Sweden, not Switzerland, though they're both up there. Ammego McCain: Everyone does pay into universalized healthcare-- especially the rich, many of whom would not qualify as "workers." You're acting as if poor people would somehow be getting a free ride on the backs of hard working working class people. The point is, that if the government can enforce "god's rules" in terms of something like gay marriage, they can do the same in terms of healthcare. Consider the fact that firefighting, law enforcement, water management, and road building/repair are all "socialized," money spent on the public good through taxation. Avatar: Yeah, great attitude, that's how we got the 8 hour day, women's suffrage, and ended segregation. And yes, philosophically, the argument for capitalism involves equating freedom with opportunity in the market. Any real American would say, "If you don't like America, change it."

- The same way that they used the Bible to support slavery. Religion in America is just another way of expressing your political beliefs.
- The more a country is atheistic, the more it has a tendency to help the poor... http://www.poverty.com/internationalaid.html
- It is not just the American Republicans that over spend.......It is ALL who hold office in America that over spend It is not a one sided issue.....Republicans want to blame the Democrats for pork spending....and the Democrats want to blame the Republicans for pork spending It is both sides...there is no innocent party involved
- All the most atheistic countries have been social care systems than the US. Obviously, Christianity is NOT the answer.
- Well first of all America is not a christian nation for she speaks like a dragon with that in mind, the rest of your question is really irrelevant
- Just a punctualization about european politics. Public healthcare is nowadays a reality in most european countries; in that sense it is not to be considered a prerogative of any party, christian or not. Here too, anyway, the very same people who defends "christian values" are the ones who wants to dismantle it. Go figure.
- You miss the point. He was telling the rich man his main problem. Not everyone in general. God has no problem with people earning and saving and having money. Its only, as it was with that one man how made money his happiness, then the problem comes into being. You also need to realize that forcing people to pay more and more for those who will NOT work is the main issue most who oppose universal health care have. Everyone should have health care, but everyone should pay for it as well, not just the workers. Get rid of the lawyers, the lawsuits and the malpractice payments, then the rates will drop to where everyone could buy it if they wanted it.
- the downfall of "pick-and-choose" biblicalism is it allows for greed-oriented philosophies to be justified and even sanctified (as per Calvinism); there are verses that can be and have been used to justify anything. that is why the bible should not be taken literally; rather the spirit of goodwill should be emphasized, not excuses to enforce bigotries or injustices. As recently as the 1930s, active Christians were more concerned with justice, sical reforms and addressing poverty than about shoving dogmas down people's throats - let alone about smiting their enemies and jusging others, as the current breed loves to do.
- It always confuses me that the US doesn't have a healthcare system. For one of the richest nations in the world it's a disturbing prospect. Over here in the UK, we bitch about the National Health Service a lot, due to inefficiency, waiting lists, yadda yadda, but we actually HAVE one, and people get healthcare. And yeah, doesn't it say a lot that the politicians who yell loudest about being good moral Christians are the ones who oppose this for their citizens?
- "I'm rich. In Canada, which has universal health care, the rich people don't get health care faster than the poor people. That's not fair. Rich people aren't supposed to have to wait in lines. Let's deny health care to poor people so that I don't have to wait in line." EDIT: Ammego McCain: You're already paying for health care for people who can't afford it. Hospitals can't legally turn away emergency patients who can't afford care. Universal Heatlh Care could decrease the amount you'll pay because people will get preventative care before their problem becomes serious and expensive.
- the key words..."if you wish to be complete.." I am human and can't be complete, I do my best by can't. It really has nothing to do with your rant though. There is NO perfect system. Sweden is a beautiful place that could be ran over in a few days. However, they have there own problems and issues that anyone could rant about also. Freedom is defined by financial opportunity?? I know a lot of people that barely get by, yet, they are free and very content. I know democrats that are very wealthy and miserable, republicans too. I say move to Sweden, if you don't like America then get out.
