What financial help is there for students living at home?
I'm currently applying to uni and one of the universities (anglia ruskin) I would be living at home, yet I can't find much info on financial help on it!

- You should still get some financial aid, just not as much. Because living at home usually cuts the cost of education in half, you won't need as much.
- As far as I know there is no kind of benefits through the Government anyway that are offered to the students.
- hey, i can help with this as i am in that exact situation! basically you apply for financial help exactly the same as a student living on campus would. you just don't apply for an accomodation loan. there are 3 types you get - accomodation (you wont be able to get this if at home) living costs loan - ALL students can apply for this & the maximum per year for living at home is usually approx £2800. (Living at uni - you are entitled to more). Tuition fee loan - again ALL students can apply for this & it is a loan to cover the tuition fees, which for most courses are now around £3100 per year. You may also be entitled to a bursary, which is a small sum of money (usually £300-£500 pounds) which you do not have to pay back. This has been introduced by the government because of the high course fees that are now charged. The amount you get will depend on parents income etc...and when you apply for your loans etc...there is a small box to tick that says 'would you like to be considered for a bursary' all you have to do is tick it & they will contact you if you are entitled to it. However, this money does not come through till Spring, even though you will start in september. Any other questions feel free to contact me xx p.s if you apply for living costs & tuition fee loan, you living costs loan gets paid in 3 installments throughout the year, directly into your bank account. your tuition fee loan gets paid directly to the university by your local authority.
- I did this for my son this time last year. He also lives at home and studied at ARU. It does depend on your parents income, if your parents are unemployed, retired or on a low income you will get just under £3000 in grants from the government; this in not a loan and you DO NOT have to pay it back. They do allow loans as well but as my son did not get these I can't tell you the amounts involved. ARU the uni you are applying to do a bursary and a scholarship which you must apply for because again these do not have to be paid back; the scholarship is £2000 for this academic year - it may be more next year and the bursary is just over £300 for this academic year. This is an old leaflet about the bursary and scholarship but it still has relevent information on it; http://web.apu.ac.uk/clearing/9815_ARU_Awards.pdf Don't forget to apply for your NHS exemption certificate as you will be on a low income and MAY be entitled to free prescriptions etc. Good Luck at uni and have fun!
