How can I start a fundraiser for a young quadriplegic who has no financial help?

My brother has been paralyzed for the last 6 years and has not had therapy in over 4 years due to financial reasons. He basically has just been wasting away in his bed in his room. Im torn everyday watching him just detioriorate. My family has no money and therefore we are not able to do much for him. There are things that he wants to buy to cheer himself up and he cant afford them. He only receives roughly $400 amonth from SSI, which usually goes on small little things. I want to somehow financially help him to be able to purchase anything he may need or want. I just dont know how i can do it. I feel so utterly useless and helpless and I am being affected everyday of my life for the last 6 years and the years to come im sure. Any suggestions are welcome as I am frantic and desperate to help him.

  1. I believe that you have to start a non-profit organization (for tax purposes) to actually collect donations. After that, you have many options for fund raising. Check with restaurants in your area, and have them donate gift certificates. Actually, any business in your area can make a tax deductable donation. Then you can have a benefit with a silent auction to sell all donated items. Many restaurants/clubs/etc will donate the space for it and sometimes even food. Check with your local businesses. Good luck!
