How to get financial help for Specialty Boarding School?

My son is 10th grader. He is what is called "struggling teen". I had to send him to this school in hopes for better future for him. The tuition cost is more than average parent can imagine. I'm single mom with limited income. Parents whose kids are/were enrolled in such a program - please help with any recommendations on financial help.

  1. I don't know what you mean by struggling for sure, but I can imagine the costs. My son went to a private school that cost around 20K a year for an education I ended up not being happy with. If you mean he is struggling in his schoolwork, I think all that money may be better spent on personal tutors. ANY private school worth a box of Cracker Jacks should have financial assistance programs. That's part of the reason for the high tuition, so those who really need can be given a break and that's where some of the money goes to. If you mean his struggles are emotional I would go about getting some kind of statement from a doctor that would say the type of school you want to send him to is the best option for him. You would want it to say something along the line of Public Schools are not good for him do to the class size, blah, blah but in his PROFESSIONAL opinion sending your son to a PS over the private one would be damaging. With that in hand, see what the state can do for you. I say get that note because you know that their first response will be "Well, the Public Schools have some very good special classes" and you want to show them that an MD says that isn't fly. Last, here are some sites about financial aid for private high schools: http://www.petersons.com/highschool/file.asp?id=946&path=hs.pfs.overview http://www.petersons.com/highschool/file.asp?id=950&sponsor=1&path=hs.pfs.tuition http://www.teennewhorizons.com/financial_help.htm Best of luck to both you and your son. Remember, you are son's greatest ally and if it comes to homeschooling him, you know him best.
