Where can we get financial assistance to help care for a homebound individual?

We rent a portion of a personal residence from an elderly gentleman and are looking for ways to receive financial assistance to help defray the cost of food, house cleaning and transportation back an forth to the hospital, dialysis, doctor appointments, etc.

  1. Medicaid has a program called the waiver program, where the person can pick people he wants to be his provider, and pick his own hours, and they can come in and take care of him, and his house, and are well paid. Does he get Medicaid?
  2. You should go to your local Department of Family and Children Services.
  3. What State? Most States have some sort of 1915c Medicaid waiver for Home and Community Based services. The passage of the DRA (deficit reduction act) a while back has also expanded services that state's are allowed to cover and still receive federal matching dollars. However, all States are different. I work in Maryland Medicaid. Our Older Adults waiver allows for Home Health aids. The man would need to pass some income and means tests, and would also need to be evalutated for a level of care (how sick is he), but the waiver requirements are less restrictive than traditional Medicaid requirements. Contact your county or city social services office. They would be the first place to check.
