How do you get financial help insulating an old house?
I have recently been diagnosed with a rare blood disorder, "Cold Agglutinin Disease" which effects my platelets when I get cold. I live in an old, drafty house that is COLD in winter. It is important that I get it well insulated before winter and I need help financing this. I was told that there are Governement grants and such one can take advantage of in this case but I have no idea where to look.

- Call your local welfare office (DHHR) or your local Community Action. They should be able to get you the help you deserve.
- it depends on where you live. there are many programs in mass. depending on your income, they may do it for free. the first step would be to check with your town and try to set up a free energy audit. if you have gas heat they may also provide the audit for free. I know the MA gas provider does. I don't know the name because I use oil heat. I was pretty upset b/c in MA, the gas company will insulate your house for almost free if the energy audit says it is necessary. Good luck.
- Check with your local utility. Most coops and some private power generator will give you rebates on this type of product. Current government subsidies are limited to hot water heaters. If you are eligible for medicare or the like, you may be eligible for help. Plan on at least a 2 year legal battle.
- Depending on were you live you can contact places like Energy Star it is a company that can evaluate your house and depending on your income, supply you with the grants and loans available to get your home insulated however, they do charge a fee for the evaluation. Or you can go to your town hall and again depending on the town you live in there are grants available but there is only a limited amount of money.
- I had an old house and got a zero interest loan from my gas and electric company for the insulation cost.
- call habitat for humanity international good lock
