Financial Aid experts HELP! Questions about aid and grad school...?

So here's my scenario: 1) Graduated from undergrad in May 2007. 2) Called Sallie Mae, they said my status is that I am enrolled in school till Dec. 2008 and won't begin repayment till July 2009. Don't understand how that could be...?? 3) I plan on attending grad school in Fall of 2008. Q1: Why does Sallie Mae think I am still enrolled in school till Dec. 2008? Is that a good thing (customer service rep says yes, b/c i won't be accruing interest and no need to defer payments...is that true)? Q2: Considering my scenario above, how will it affect my FAFSA application when I apply for grad school next year?

  1. They probably think you are still in school because that is what your school certified on one of your last loans. I am surprised that they didnt want to make the change to make it correct, but Sallie Mae hires alot of temporary people this time of year that usually DONT have the correct answers. I would call again and talk to someone else. I dont think it will affect your future aid, but you should have made some payments after your grace period. Again, I would call to discuss it again. Ask for a supervisor.
  2. yes
  3. You are responsible for making sure Sallie Mae has the correct information, including your graduation date. This is usually in the fine print of your promissory note. Either you can change it now on the phone, or Sallie Mae will change it when the school reports to them you've graduated.(sometimes ages after the fact). Trust me, It'll catch up to you eventually. I guarantee Sallie Mae will go back and correct the due dates after the deferment on your loan. It could come back to bite you after the fact.... they can say you are now XX months overdue based on your graduation date. You won't be able to prove you were in school until Dec 08. Call them back quick!
