Can I apply for financial aid if I recently lost my job?

I want to return to school after a long (8years) interruption. Can I apply for FAFSA?

  1. yeah you can.. there are tons of kids that get financial aid that dont work. they just get loans and pay them off after school.and good for you for actually going back to school alot of people dont do it after a period of time..
  2. Since you're an adult, you'll get a loan depending on your credit history. When high school students apply for financial, their parents co-sign the loan with them (cause most high schoolers don't have a credit history) so the money lender will make money from interest either way. But since you want to go back after 8 years, a loan (including FAFSA) would be dependent on your credit history. If you have good credit then you'll probably get the financial aid you need, but a lender wouldn't loan money to someone if they didn't have a history of paying their bills on time.
  3. Of course you can! Why wouldn't you be able to. I don't have a job, and I've been going to school for a few years now. Just apply, and put in your income as usual (it goes by your income from last year). Then go in and explain that you've recently lost your job, and that your income has changed dramatically. They should be able to make accommodations. You'll be okay. Don't worry.
  4. ACTUALLY---- Yes go ahead and register for school and go to http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/ (that's the Federal Financial Aid...you have to fill this out to get any aid) Once you do that, you can go to the school and file for and ammendment for your CURRENT income for the school year that you will be attending. They will reevaluate your aid. And NO....student loans have NOTHING to do with your credit. TRUST ME ON THAT ONE....
  5. Ditto on the loans NOT being based on credit. They are federal loans, not bank loans. Fill out the FAFSA but keep in mind, they use the tax information from the previous year. So, if you just lost your job you would still have to put your 2006 tax information on your FAFSA. Ask your college's financial aid office for a special circumstances or special consideration application and try for that! Good luck!
