- Just for college, dear.
- The FAFSA is used to determine eligibility for the Pell Grant, low interest loans and the financial aid award letters at the college. If Pell eligible, the money is deposited in the school account after the student enrolls. In some community colleges, the amount is enough to cover tuition and misc. fees with money left over which is usually refunded to the student. This money can then be used toward covering the cost of books, buying a computer and living expenses. Also, by filling out the FAFSA, you may be eligible for low interest educational loans that can also be used for living expenses. If you have anymore questions, check and see if there is an Educational Opportunity Center or a Veteran's Upward Bound in your area. They're funded by the U.S. Department of Education to help with questions just like this!
- As a Veteran who received GI Bill and now works in the financial aid profession, I would recommend that you fill out the FAFSA each year. FAFSA is the basic application for all federal and many forms of state and institutional aid. While these funds are limited to "educational costs", remember that housing, food, transportation and other miscellaneous expenses are "educational costs". So if you receive funds beyond the direct costs to the institution, the refund check you get could be used for these other costs.
